When I started out 10 + years ago. Back before I even knew what a doula was, I was a parent advocate. I was going to change the world with my radio show and my blog. I was a blogging fool. It was easier then as I only had two kids and I worked in my sister and I’s maternity store. While no one was shopping in the store, which was like all the time,( did I mention we went out of business?), I would sit in my office and blog away. Two more kids later and an insane tour schedule and blogging has become a sore spot for me. Finding the time to do it and then actually sitting down and making words make sense is a pain. I shared that with a friend recently and inferred that maybe I’d lost my passion. Well, no that didn’t sound right, I insisted it was a time issue and she said “if it’s important to you, you will find the time. You’re just making excuses for whatever reason and I’m not going to let you get away with that.” So, after giving her my best dirty look, I decided I would figure this out. So here’s what I did and what you can do too:

1. Get Your Shit Together
I had to get organized. There’s just no way to get anything done without this bitch of a step. I bit the bullet and attacked my office. Granted I had to go back and listen to the series I did years ago with my Life Coach Christy Farr. I realized two things after listening to that series (Sick of Being Stuck), 1. I need a life coach again. 2. As much as this was going to take work, it would be SO worth it. So, I jumped in, it was ugly but I did it.

2. JUST SAY NO!

Say no. Say it more often. I would say yes to all the things and wonder why I have no time. It’s okay to say no. Yes is great but NO is important.

3. Get off SOCIAL MEDIA
It’s such a huge time suck. It’s also a necessary evil for me. BUT it can turn from promoting an upcoming workshop to watching a funny video to “OH CRAP HAVE I REALLY BEEN ON FB FOR 4 HOURS??” Yeah, it can be bad. It’s addictive. SO, I set boundaries. I get on in the AM but only after I do my finances in the morning have coffee and send kids off to school. And I set a timer. It’s made SUCH a difference. I get on again when the baby takes a nap and again for a bit after they all go to bed.

4. Make your TO DO LIST reasonable
Take it easy on yourself. My daily list now has 4 things on it. The MOST important things are on my list. If I get them done I treat myself to a snack and write down 2 more. Laundry lists in and of themselves are a time suck. You are a human being make a human TO DO list.

5. Delegate or Outsource
You cannot do it all. Ask your spouse or friends to help with things you can’t do. You just can’t, make peace with that. Now do something about it. There is no honor in wearing yourself out. So, find a real or virtual assistant. I have a new admin and my life has gotten SO much better. I keep thinking I can’t afford her, but I can’t afford to NOT have her. I have more time now across the board and life is good.
